From “We can’t play” to “Do the griddy!”

We had our 3rd flag football game today.

The other team marched down the field and scored on the very first drive.
7–0.

“This is gonna be a long day” I whispered under my breath.

Next play, their kid straight up tackles our best player (Ryan). He’s hurt. Crying. Out of the game.

The very next play?

One of OUR players tackles his own teammate. He’s hurt too. Leaves the field.

We’re down to 4 players in a 5-on-5 league. I’m pissed. I tell the refs we can’t play. The other coach lends us a kid.

At halftime, it’s still 7–0.

Initially, I thought the team was pretty good. I then realized we’re pretty damn good, too.

Then Ryan comes back. Scored a long TD, or so we though. He dropped the ball at the half yard line as he was celebrating.

The next play, we hand the ball to Weston. TOUCHDOWN! His Dad yells from the sideline, “Do the griddy!” It was too late, and told his Dad we’ll get it next time.

It’s a tie game, 7-7.

We go back and forth.

Then the plot twist…

The loaner kid from the other team busts out a long score on a short pass. We’re up 14-7.

Final minute. 4th down. I whisper to Weston, “Watch the QB’s eyes.”

The QB heaves the ball down the right side of the field. Weston leaps, and snags the ball at the highest point. INTERCEPTION!

I run and pick up Weston, and whisper, “Do the girddy for your Dad”.

He busts out the griddy.

His Dad loses it on the sidelines.

Here’s the kicker: I almost robbed those boys of that moment.

I was being a bitch.

I wanted to throw in the towel. I left my emotions get the best of me.

I realized something earlier on…

These boys feed off my energy. If I wanted them to play hard, I needed to lead by example.

Every flag pull, I ran to the player and patted him on the back.

“Great flag pull, Ryan!”

“That’s how you do it, Weston!”

“Ashton! That’s how you pull a flag!”
