I heard some commotion outside.
On Wednesday night, I was recording a podcast around midnight.
I heard some yelling…some screaming outside.
I looked out the window and saw what looked like smoke, but didn’t think much of it.
The screaming & yelling got louder.
I ran to look out Ava’s window.
And the house across the street was in flames.
I quickly ran downstairs.
Put on my shoes, and opened the front door.
And was greeted by a heat on my face as if I stuck my head in an oven.
Here’s what I was looking at;
“Never in a million years did I ever expect something like this to happen to us”
Said the new Dad at the foot of my driveway as we watched the flames spread.
He was standing in a t-shirt, boxers and socks.
I ran inside to grab pants, a hoodie and a pair of shoes for him to wear.
He’s a much larger man than my 5’8″ frame, so none of them were his size. He did take the shoes, which were about 4 sizes too small.
Him, his pregnant wife and young daughter escaped unharmed.
They were sleeping and woke up to a burning smell.
He checked the house and didn’t see anything, so went back to bed.
A few minutes later, his wife noticed the smell was getting stronger.
He thought to check the garage, as that was a spot he hadn’t checked.
There was the fire.
He attempted to throw towels on it, which made it worse.
Grabbed the garden hose, but that was as useless as a leash on a goldfish.
Life can change in an instant.
For this family, who sadly didn’t have renters insurance, their lives are forever changed.
Be grateful for what you have.
