We had our last flag football game of the season this morning. We’d lost all 5 games. A rough season would be an understatement. It was windy today, and I prefer to pass the ball often. We were leading 7-6 after the first quarter. Our first lead of the season. We were down 19-14 at half. They scored right away in the 3rd, along with a 2 point conversion. We head to the 4th quarter down 27-13. “We only need 2 more touchdowns to win,” my son says in the huddle. “Easier said than done. We need to stop them on defense,” I said. We scored on a pass to Ashton. Down 27-20. They get the ball back and we haven’t stopped them once this game. They keep going at our weakest player, which has been a recipe for success for them. I put the kid at safety. 4th down. About 6 yards to get. We stop them. Get the ball back. I put Ashton at quarterback with a minute to go. I call a running play, as it’s too windy to throw. He misses the handoff and launches it for a 25-yard gain. No timeouts. We hurry to the line. “Same play. Hand it off this time.” He misses the handoff AGAIN. He rolls left (he’s a lefty) and throws a strike to Moana )the only girl on the team) for a touchdown. 28-27. 10 seconds left. They get one more play. We stop them. We won our first game of the season. The kids celebrated like they won the Super Bowl. On the drive home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how Ashton didn’t execute on the play I called. Twice.
