I bit her lip (and other things I’m not proud of)

I had a lady ask on Threads this weekend:

“How do you develop your writing style if you’re just starting out and writing is not super easy for you?”

Here’s what I said…

“I bit my girlfriend’s lip the 1st time I kissed her.

Our noses collided the first FEW times. I was so embarrassed. I worried she’d tell the entire school about it, and I’d never get married or have kids.

That didn’t stop me, and I kept kissing girls. Over time, and a lot or practice, I got pretty decent at kissing.

It’s the same with writing. Or any skill on the planet. You’re gonna suck at first, and it might be uncomfortable, but you get better with practice.”

Why am I confessing a horror story from 9th grade that I remember quite vividly?

Your first 100 (or 300) posts on social aren’t gonna be good.

Your first couple dozen emails ain’t gonna be good.

Your first couple of dozen talking head style videos will likely be horrendous.

You’ll overthink every other word.

You’re delete more than you hit publish.

You’ll wonder if anyone is reading or watching.

And your bitch brain will be LOUD at this time…

“WTF am I even doing?!? Nobody cares”

Bullshit!

You’re just new. And we all suck when we’re new at anything (I didn’t learn how to ride a bike until I was like 7, as I was terrified of crashing into the bushes)

Every creator you admire for their writing, or on on camera presence likely wasn’t that good when they started.

(few have natural talent, but it ain’t the norm)

They kept showing up.

They kept creating and hitting publish.

Eventually, they got better the more reps they put in.

Their writing got better, their on camera presence improved, their storytelling held the audience longer which led to a boost in confidence.

You don’t stumble upon these skills, you develop them over time.

Remember…confidence comes AFTER the reps.

Nobody is born a good kisser.

Nobody is born a good Creator.

You just gotta be willing to bump noses for a while. 😜

YOU GOT THIS 🙌

In your corner,
Adam
